The Drifters & The Blue Notes

A:We played at Hantsville, Decatur, you know, Alabama area.
Bill Pinkney &The Drifters came to the town. Bill Pinkney, he was the original bass singer for The Drifters. He hired me as a drummer...
J:Really ?! As a drummer ?
A:Yeah, he hired me as a drummer, but I didn't have any drums, so he hired me as a singer with the band. And I was on the road with them, and when the drummer got sick, I played drums, and when the piano player got sick, I played piano.
J:You did everything...
A: Yeah. And then I moved up to the lead singer. And this was on until 1974 or 5.
And I quitted the band and moved to Augusta Georgia, home of James Brown. And I joined a band called "Leroy Roid Swinging Dukes", that band was a combination of James Brown's musicians.
And I worked at a recording studio called Custom Recording Company which we did a lot of sound-like tapes for every song when it came out on the market. We were going in re-recorded, simulation. So I similated Al Green , I similated Chi-lites, whoever came out, you know, we sold soul track tapes. They sold custom 8 tracks tapes, and my voice was on it for years.
J:Really ?!!
Do you still have them ?
A: No, no, no. They were sued by Warner Bros. and much record companies, so they stopped these business. So in '75, I came back to The Drifters as a lead singer of The Drifters.
J:So not as a musician, but a singer.
A:"Hai "( he said "Yes" in Japanese ) , hahaha...
And stayed with them up to 76.
And then I tried out with The Temptations. I wanted audition with The Temptations, but I did not make it, because my appearance was not acceptable, my different colored hair.
J:Yeah, I've ever heard about it.
A:So after that I joined The Blue Notes, replaced Teddy Pendergrass. And I sang with them for 2 years.
